PRESS CALL: Sen. Ed Markey, Environmental Advocates Call on DOE to Use Stronger Criteria for New LNG Export Approvals

WASHINGTON— Environmental advocates will host a virtual press conference Tuesday to present a new Center for Biological Diversity analysis of key criteria for the Department of Energy to consider for liquified natural gas, or LNG, export authorizations. The advocates will be joined by Sen. Ed Markey (D-Mass.), chair of the Senate Subcommittee on Clean Air, Climate, and Nuclear Safety.

The proposed baseline set of criteria are crucial as the agency updates the economic and climate studies used in its public interest determination process as part of the Biden administration’s pause on new LNG export approvals. More than 300 groups are calling on the department to use the baseline to revamp its public interest criteria to include environmental justice, public health, energy costs, climate and national security.

This is a critical opportunity for the Department of Energy to ensure the needs of the public are finally prioritized after years of the agency rubberstamping LNG proposals in spite of harms to communities, the economy and the climate.

What: Virtual press conference to present the Center for Biological Diversity’s baseline public interest determination analysis and criteria for the Department of Energy to consider for LNG export authorizations.
