WASHINGTON— The Center for Biological Diversity joined eight other groups today in suing the Trump administration over its attempt to prevent California and other states from setting more protective vehicle pollution standards.
Today’s lawsuit, filed in the D.C. District Court, argues that the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration had no authority to preempt California and other states from setting more stringent standards or requiring automobile manufacturers to include increasing numbers of zero-emission vehicles in their fleets.
“There’s no legal basis for the Trump administration’s efforts to leave Californians choking on smog and helpless to curb greenhouse gas pollution spewing out of car tailpipes,” said Maya Golden-Krasner, a Los Angeles-based attorney at the Center. “This attack on the air we breathe is reckless and despicable, and it won’t hold up in court.”
