Fossil Fuel Resisters to March on Washington, Across Nation

Peoples Climate March Responds to 100 Days of Trump's Attacks on Planet

WASHINGTON The Center for Biological Diversity's staff and members will join the Peoples Climate March in Washington, D.C. and across the nation on Saturday in united resistance to Trump's attacks on the climate during his first 100 days in office.

The Center will co-lead the Fossil Fuel Resistance Bloc in Washington and will spearhead and join sister marches in Los Angeles, Oakland, Flagstaff, Denver, St. Petersburg, Portland, Tucson and other cities.

“Trump's relentless attack on our planet will hurt millions of people,” said Jean Su, the Center's associate conservation director. “But Trump's assault has shaken America wide awake. We're united in our resistance to his cynical plans to pollute our air and water, leave our homes vulnerable to climate catastrophe and sacrifice our wildlife and beautiful public lands to the fossil fuel industry.”

Trump has proposed cutting the EPA's budget by 31 percent and appointed a fossil-fuel friendly cabinet that includes EPA chief Scott Pruitt and former Exxon chief Rex Tillerson as secretary of State. Executive orders to lift the federal moratorium on coal leasing on public lands, green-light the Keystone XL and Dakota Access pipelines, and roll back the Clean Power Plan threaten Americans' health and the world's climate.

The March for the Peoples Climate Movement, in the nation's capital and more than 250 cities around the country, will show a united front against Trump's attack on the people and the planet. The Peoples Climate Movement will continue beyond the April 29 march and includes frontline and indigenous communities, faith leaders, labor, environmentalists, and fighters against fossil fuel projects.

The Fossil Fuel Resistance Bloc will be a leading contingent at the Peoples Climate March, bringing together communities and groups fighting fracking, oil and gas projects and overall fossil fuel development. Organizations directing this bloc include the Center, 350.org, Oil Change International and Food & Water Watch.

The Center is also using the law to defend the climate against Trump's assault. In the president's first 100 days in office, the Center has launched nearly a dozen lawsuits against the administration. Among other actions, the Center and allies have sued the Trump administration for lifting the moratorium on federal coal leasing and approving the Keystone XL pipeline despite threats to water, wildlife, public health and the climate.

“Trump's climate change policy puts corporate profits ahead of people and the planet,” said Andres Sheikh, an Oakland-based organizer with the Center who is coordinating march efforts in California and Washington. “We're marching together against this administration's reckless attacks on our future.”

The Center for Biological Diversity is a national, nonprofit conservation organization with more than 1.2 million members and online activists dedicated to the protection of endangered species and wild places.
